The Challenge: Proving Carbon Impact at Scale
African Clean Energy (ACE) manufactures innovative biomass cookstoves that dramatically reduce CO2 emissions compared to traditional cooking methods. But to claim carbon credits and verify environmental impact, ACE needs real usage data from stoves deployed across remote communities.
How do you collect verified emissions data from thousands of stoves scattered across rural areas where WiFi is rare and cellular coverage is spotty?
The Solution: A Three-Layer Connectivity Strategy
Innolabs partnered with ACE to design and implement a flexible IoT connectivity system that adapts to any environment. Our approach uses a phased rollout with three complementary technologies:
Phase 1: Bluetooth-First (Immediate)
- Every stove ships with BLE connectivity
- Customers sync data through the ACE Connect mobile app
- QR code activation links each stove to the customer's account
- Zero infrastructure required - works anywhere with a smartphone
Phase 2: WiFi Smart Stove (Enhanced)
- Stoves connect to customers' home WiFi networks
- Automatic data sync without phone interaction
- The stove becomes a "smart appliance" - always connected
Phase 3: LoRa Mesh for Remote Areas
- For communities without WiFi coverage
- Stoves form mesh networks, relaying data to central gateways
- Data reaches the cloud even from the most remote locations
The Technical Innovation
The system uses a single compact module that supports all three connectivity modes simultaneously:
- BLE for initial setup and direct smartphone pairing
- WiFi for automatic cloud sync in connected homes
- LoRa mesh for extending coverage to neighboring stoves
Each WiFi-enabled stove can act as a gateway for up to 99 nearby stoves, creating organic mesh networks that grow with the deployment.
Data That Proves Carbon Impact
The connected stoves capture verified operational data essential for carbon credit validation:
- Cooking duration and frequency - proves actual stove usage
- Fan operation time - indicates efficient combustion cycles
- Battery health monitoring - ensures reliable long-term operation
This data enables ACE to:
- Verify carbon credit claims with auditable, real-time usage data
- Calculate precise CO2 reductions based on actual cooking patterns vs. traditional methods
- Meet certification requirements for carbon offset programs
- Scale carbon credit revenue as deployment grows
The Partnership
Innolabs provides ongoing technical advisory and development support for ACE's IoT initiative, including:
- Hardware specification and component selection
- Firmware development
- PCB design and prototype field testing
- Backend integration with ACE's Salesforce and Odoo platforms
- Network topology design for mesh deployments
- Security architecture and data privacy compliance
Where It Stands Today
The system is in active development. Innolabs is handling PCB design, firmware, and prototype field testing, starting with the Bluetooth-first phase. The WiFi smart-stove and LoRa-mesh phases follow, with the same architecture designed to scale across ACE's deployments in Cambodia and Africa.
What's Next
With verified usage data flowing from connected stoves, ACE can confidently scale their carbon credit programs while expanding clean cooking access to communities that need it most.
